Mole Valley Orienteering Club are delighted to offer a new form of individual training with the aim of getting you out and about and exploring the streets, parks and forests throughout the club’s region.

These courses set the challenge of visiting as many of the control locations as possible before returning to the starting point.

The free MapRun smartphone app will automatically record each control you visit, and at the end will upload your result so you can compare your performance against everyone else. Come back again and try a different route next time to optimise your time!

MapRun requires no infrastructure on the ground – all you need is a smartphone and a copy of the map; it’s a time trial rather than a race so you can run any course, any time you want!

This form of training will also be an excellent introduction to orienteering if you have never tried it before, so give it a go and let us know how you get on. Also, if you are an experienced orienteer, please tell your friends about this as it is free to all.

More detailed guidance of how to use the app is contained in this document.

The MapRun app is available from the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

The courses are currently setup to allow you to start and finish the course at any of the control sites. When you visit your chosen starting control, the timer will start and will only stop once you have returned to that control. If you choose a different start control, the start/finish control shown on the map will automatically convert to a control site and you will get points for visiting this control.

More courses will be added. If you would like a course added from a previous MVOC Street O event, or indeed a new course planned, please contact the Clerk clerk AT mvoc.org

IMPORTANT NOTES: You should only do these training runs if you can do so whilst adhering to the current government guidance e.g. observing social distancing. They are designed to be run individually and as it is not a race, please be courteous to others. See the attached British Orienteering Code of Conduct document, which can be found here.

These courses are not official events. All involve running on and across potentially busy roads. You are wholly and solely responsible for your own safety and conduct whilst using the map and/or running a MapRun course. By downloading a Mole Valley Orienteering Club map either on paper or via the app you accept this responsibility.

Courses available on this website have been designed and published using maps extracted from Open Street Map, via the Open Orienteering Map website. We cannot vouch for or warrant the accuracy of the background map, nor that a route shown on the map is a legitimate right of way for the purposes of running a MapRun course.
